MSC Doctoral Network: “Photo-switchable ultra-thin membranes for molecular separation” – PhotoBrane

Job description

The work will be carried out within the framework of the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Training Network PhotoBrane – “Photo-switchable ultra-thin membranes for molecular separation“. PhotoBrane is at the forefront of innovation, developing next-generation photo-tunable and photo-regenerable membranes. These groundbreaking membranes potentially transform industries such as energy conversion, biomedical applications, water purification, and environmental protection by enhancing selectivity, permeability, and operational longevity.

In the project “Photo-switches for 2D Layers by Design,” we aim to design a series of molecular photo-switches with amphiphilic properties that can form ordered two-dimensional layers of varying packing densities at the water-air interface. These switches should also be capable of cross-linking under mild conditions at the water-air interface. This project requires a strong foundation in organic and dye chemistry, alongside expertise in computational chemistry for efficient property prediction.

Successful Candidates will manage quantum chemical workflows via command-line interfaces on Linux-based supercomputers. You will work with a range of programs such as OpenBabel, VMD, QuantumEspresso, LAMMPS, GPAW, GAMESS, and openCOSMO-RS to design and optimize these target structures. In addition to advanced knowledge in synthetic chemistry, proficiency in programming Python scripts is essential. Secondments to European partner institutions are mandatory. Dr Martin Presselt from Leibniz Institute of Photonics Technology will be co-supervisor of the PhD-Thesis. The research conducted in this position is expected to form the basis of a doctoral dissertation, leading to the award of a PhD degree.

Your field of activity includes:

  • In silico design of photoswitchable amphiphilic and cross-linkable dyes
  • Planning, execution, and evaluation of quantum chemical calculations on molecules, with a focus on structure optimization and property prediction (e.g., amphiphilicity, IR and Raman spectra, UV-vis absorption and emission spectra) based on literature benchmarks
  • Application of a broad range of computational chemistry software packages

The proposed doctoral research project “Synthesis and fabrication of cross-linked photo-responsive Langmuir layers” will be concerned with the synthesis of two-dimensional light-responsive polymers at the air-water interface. A variety of amphiphilic dyes, especially photo-switches, will be linked via covalent bonds. The latter should enable the preparation of molecularly thin, but chemically and mechanically stable and free-standing membranes that enable light-controlled molecular sieving as innovative separation process. Secondments to European partner institutions are mandatory. The research conducted in this position is expected to form the basis of a doctoral dissertation, leading to the award of a PhD degree.
