A joint paper by Prof. Jacek Mlynarski and the Chinese research team led by Prof. Xihe Bi has been published in Nature Chemistry, reporting a breakthrough thermal [2+2] cycloaddition that was previously considered as symmetry-forbidden due to ground-state orbital symmetry constraints. The developed methodology enables highly selective access to novel gem-difluorinated bicyclic frameworks of significant relevance to medicinal chemistry. This discovery opens new avenues for constructing complex molecular architectures under non-photochemical conditions.
