Dr Rafał Kusy and prof. Karol Grela published a cover article titled: „Ligand-Free (Z)-Selective Transfer Semihydrogenation of Alkynes Catalyzed by in situ Generated Oxidizable Copper Nanoparticles”.

The publication presents (Z) -selective transfer semi-hydrogenation of alkynes based on in situ generated CuNPs in the presence of hydrogen donors such as ammonia-borane and a green protic solvent. This environmentally friendly method is characterized by ease of use combined with high stereo- and chemoselectivity and compatibility of functional groups. Self-oxidation of Cu NPs after completion of the semi-hydrogenation reaction leads to the formation of a water-soluble ammonia complex, so that the catalyst can be reused several times by simple phase separation without the need for a special regeneration process. The NH4B (OR) 4 formed can easily be converted back into ammonia borate or boric acid. Additionally, a one-pot tandem sequence with a Suzuki reaction followed by semi-hydrogenation was presented, which minimizes the production of chemical waste.
