The article presents a new type of diketopyrrolopyrrole with a π-extended chromophore. The authors developed a two-step synthesis of the title functional dyes by a combination of N-arylation and double intramolecular direct arylation. These pigments strongly emit red light. The publication explains why π-extended diketopyrrolopyrroles, despite having two nitro groups, have a very strong fluorescence. It turned out that the lack of involvement of nitro groups in the S0 → S1 electron transition is the key to the strong emission of aromatic compounds containing NO2 groups. The article was written in cooperation with teams from Germany and France.
