Research activity

The main, long term research interests of the group are concerned on the application of NMR spectroscopy to general problems of organic and bioorganic chemistry, i.e., searching conformational space of molecules and studying intra and intermolecular interactions. These projects are focused on the goals of functional genomics. Our efforts are also concerned on methodology of stereoselective synthesis design and stereochemical assignments of the reaction results. We are particularly interested in heteroatom based recyclable chiral auxiliares.

Current projects are concerned on the general strategy of elucidation of the  conformational space of flexible molecules, biomolecules and  ligand – biomolecule complexes using nuclear Overhauser enhancements (NOE) derived intramolecular distances, chemical shift calculation and  molecular modeling. The main objective of this approach is to develop a general method of characterisation ligand-biomolecule complexes in conformational ensambles.

The NMR techniques and molecular modeling are currently applied to establish tertiary structures of bioorganic molecules, peptides and oligonucleotides. Aggregation state and conformation of insulin using various techniques is investigated.  We are involved in  studying the structure of gapped DNA decamer duplex with polyethylene glycol bridges as linkers of two strands. This is a part of the molecular recognition studies  of interactions between biomolecules and camptothecin family of drugs and flavonoids acting as topoisomerase’s poisons.
